It may seem simple, but even an action like reaching for a cup of coffee requires complex and instantaneous computations by the brain. Cognitive factors, such as memories of using similar cups in the past can influence these computations. Mental health also plays a role—for example, how much we value drinking the coffee can affect how we reach for the cup. Our research aims to understand the links between cognition, mental health, and action, both in health and disease. We combine computational methods with physiological measures and neuroimaging to investigate the mechanisms underlying these connections.
