Prof. Nir Giladi

Honoring His Legacy (2024)

A senior faculty member in the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and the Sagol School of Neuroscience at Tel Aviv University.

Prof. Giladi accompanied the Sagol School of Neuroscience from the day it was founded, served on its board of directors, was an enthusiastic advocate for collaborations between practice and research, and worked tirelessly to bridge the gap between hospital clinicians and basic research on campus. He also initiated and led the "Synergy" series of meetings between basic science researchers and clinicians in various fields related to brain research (e.g., neurophysiology, neurodegeneration, neuropsychiatry).

Through his research and clinical work in the field of neurodegeneration and Parkinson’s disease, he embodied the interdisciplinary approach that the Sagol School represents, integrating genetics, cellular and molecular findings, research on brain systems, imaging, computational models, behavior, and cognition. For example, Prof. Giladi, together with research teams from Tel Aviv Medical Center (Ichilov), was among the first to identify and address gait and falls not merely as motor disturbances but as disorders with significant cognitive dimensions.

In the context of neuroscience, he also founded and managed the Aufzien Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Parkinson’s Disease, which significantly advanced Parkinson’s research and fostered collaborations between campus researchers and hospital-based scientists and physicians. Additionally, he initiated and established the Sieratzki-Sagol Institute for Sleep Research and Medicine at Tel Aviv Medical Center (Ichilov).

Prof. Giladi was an integral part of the Sagol School of Neuroscience community, contributing greatly to his colleagues and serving as a dedicated mentor to generations of students. He was also the driving force behind the establishment of the clinical track of the master’s program at the Sagol School and led it for many years.

May his memory be a blessing, and may his legacy continue to inspire future generations.
